Kieran Somerville is running in the Kyogle Council Election for A Ward.
The 40 year old works as an environmental consultant and co-manages a third generation farm. She cares for the land, sheep, cattle and wildlife.
Kieran has studied Environmental Management – Sustainable Development at the University of Queensland and Regenerative Agriculture at Southern Cross University.
She has worked as a professional photographer, loves bike riding, and was a lousy waitress in her youth.
So why is Kieran running as a candidate?
She believes she has much to give.
“My view on things is from both sides,” she said.
Kieran believes that her ability to live a hybrid life and be adaptable to change makes her an approachable person.
“I attended school and social events in town growing up, as well as immersing myself in nature on the farm.”
She lives in C Ward and she believes she can bring insight to A Ward residents by sharing her knowledge of living and working remotely on the farm.
Kieran has been a community member of the Kyogle Council Climate Change Working Group and enjoys working with a group of passionate people.
She said there are a lot of good ideas in the group and would like to see the group develop further with improved leadership and innovation.
Kieran wants to do things to better inform the community about current and future projects.
“To have a seat at the table where decisions are made,” she said.
She wants to do things that matter to the community throughout the whole Kyogle LGA.
“I see the councillor’s role as a translator between government and the community,” she said.
Kieran believes the greatest challenge facing Kyogle is how it will plan for and adapt to the changing climate.
“We need to find practical solutions that work specifically for our community,” she said.
The responsibility of a councillor is to represent the community during the planning and negotiations, allowing for transparency and honesty at the forefront.
“The community is turning to people who can lead,” she said.
“I’m excited for Kyogle’s future.”
