After 14 years, Run Casino is turning the page on an exciting new chapter.
This year, the Achieve Australia Run Casino is moving to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail with a new 21km half marathon and a whole new range of possibilities for one of Casino’s much loved community events this Sunday, September 20.
For years, runners and the local running community have been asking the same question: “When are you going to add a half marathon?”
When the suggestion came that the rail trail could provide the perfect setting, Run Casino coordinator Peta Moloney thought, “Why not?”
After 14 years, it seemed like the perfect time to try something different, give the event a little rebrand and see where this new facility could take us.
This year’s event will feature the 21km half marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km, giving runners and walkers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to get involved.
A new course, a new experience
The event will start on Dyraaba Street, giving runners the chance to spread out over the first kilometre before reaching the rail trail itself.
From there, the 2km participants will turn back onto the Rail Trail and head towards the Run Casino hub at the old Casino Railway Station, while the 5km, 10km and half marathon participants take on their respective courses and loops along the trail.
Ms Moloney is excited about the changes and is fortunate this year to have the support of an experienced event management team, Elite Energy, helping facilitate the new course and event format.
While the venue and look may be changing, the heart of Run Casino remains the same.
Funds raised from the event will continue to support the Casino Little Athletics Club whose dedicated volunteers are always there with smiling faces – come rain, hail or shine.
“For years this has been a community event not just for runners, but also for local families, particularly the kids in the 2km run/jog/walk, getting outside, being active and taking part,” Mark Emerton of Elite Energy Events said.
The event supports the Sports Access Foundation, whose mission is to help children with disability play and participate in sport across Australia.
Run Casino is also fortunate to have the continued support of its regular sponsors, led by major sponsor Achieve Australia, along with the Casino RSM Club, Park & Kissane Solicitors, Casino Fitness, Lions Club of Casino, and George and Fuhrmann.
And this could be just the beginning
If the move to the rail trail proves successful, the possibilities for future Run Casino events are exciting – from longer point-to-point distances using more of the trail, to the possibility of a full marathon running from Lismore back towards Casino.
The rail trail opens up a whole new chapter of possibilities for Run Casino.
