Several drivers contacted IndyNR.com about the extra thick double broken lines that have been painted on parts of the Summerland Way and the Bruxner Highway.
What does a double-broken line mean?
We sent a photo of the lines to Transport for NSW.
“The pictures show wide centrelines. Wide centrelines can measure up to 1.4 metres in width providing a greater distance and time for drivers to recover if unintentionally crossing into the opposing traffic lane,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
“Traditional markings of a single or double line separating traffic provide limited recovery time for drivers who unintentionally cross the centreline.
“Wide centrelines aim to reduce the likelihood of both run-off-road and head-on crashes.
“Roads marked with wide centrelines are estimated to reduce head-on crashes by 50% and run-off-road crashes by up to 25%.”
So the same rules applies as a single broken centreline, these double ones are for added safety.
This isn’t the clarity we were hoping for from Transport for NSW, but this is all we can tell you about the new double lines.
