Police Highway Patrol attempted to stop a blue Holden Commodore west bound along Summerland Way, Casino at 2.40pm yesterday, Wednesday, September 9.
Police believe the driver was the holder of a cancelled driver’s licence.
When the driver reportedly failed to stop, police chased the car.
Police deployed road spikes on Sextonville Road, Dobies Bight, where the driver allegedly swerved towards a police car – causing a police officer to take evasive action – but narrowly avoided a crash.
Police said the driver crashed into several cars and failed to stop to render assistance or exchange details.
For safety reasons the chase was terminated by police.
A short time later, police said the driver collided with a car at the intersection of Barker and Centre streets, Casino.
After that crash the 21 year old male driver and a 22 year old female passenger ran from the scene and were arrested in the carpark of a fast food outlet on Centre Street.
Both were taken to Casino Police Station.
Inquiries established that the car was reportedly displaying incorrect registration plates and was unregistered.
The man was charged with 14 offences including:
- Driving while his licence was cancelled
- Unlawfully possessing number plates
- Police pursuit – not stopping – driving recklessly
- Driving recklessly in a dangerous manner
- Use of an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
- Hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty
- Using an uninsured motor vehicle
The man was refused bail and will face court today, Thursday, September 10.
The woman was released from police custody pending further inquiries.
During this incident Casino VRA Rescue Squad was travelling in its heavy rescue truck along Centre Street, Casino, when the crew saw emergency vehicles approaching Irving Bridge.
The Rescue Squad driver pulled over to allow the emergency vehicles to pass through the heavy traffic.
A car being chased by a police car collided with another car directly in front of the rescue truck before continuing on and crashing several blocks away.
The rescue crew reported the incident via radio and assisted the driver of the uninvolved vehicle. The driver had minor injuries and did not require an ambulance.
Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene to manage an oil spill from the collision.
