Rescue crews winch and dig horse out of the mud

The Mallanganee Fire Brigade was called to help a horse at Sandilands near Bonalbo at 1.40pm today, Tuesday, June 4.

The local RFS crew assisted Casino VRA Rescue Squad who had the right gear for the job.

VRA Rescue Squad and RFS worked together to get the horse out.

That job was a horse trapped in a washout about 2metres down.

The rescue squad said the horse may have been trapped when the bank gave way and there was concern about a possible sinkhole.

Casino Rescue Squad members and Mallanganee RFS members worked together to eventually release the horse using rescue straps and winches with redirections.

The combination of clay and soft mud made getting the horse out very difficult. And the digging was slow because of the ground conditions.

The horse had no energy to stand but was alive and in a reasonable condition. The owner called a vet to attend and check on the exhausted horse.
