A large horse was stuck down a steep embankment at Boorabee Park, near Kyogle at about 11am today, Monday, July 29.

When Casino VRA Rescue Squad and the SES crew arrived, they found a large male horse about 10metres down the embankment, lying upside down and unable to move or right itself.

The rescue was complicated because crews were working from a position with the remainder of the embankment 15metres below the horse, making access to the horse challenging.

After assessing the scene, it was determined the embankment was far too steep to safely bring the horse back up the slope.

Rescue crews established a Tirfor winch system and using specialised rescue straps, manoeuvred the horse around several large trees until it was positioned on level ground.

From there, the horse was gently rolled into position before being lowered 15metres down to the roadway.

Emergency crews used a winch system to get the horse back to the roadway.

The rescue took almost four hours.

The horse has been treated by a vet and is doing well.

It took four hours to get the horse to level ground.
