A lot of locals are betting on So You Are at today’s Melbourne Cup because of the local connections.
With more than 90,000 racegoers waiting for the big race to start at Flemington Racecourse in Victoria, the Ramsey family will be cheering on So You Are.
Here’s what we’ve been told…
Agnes Fraser from Upper Duck Creek rode a horse to Old Bonalbo School with her siblings.
Agnes went on to marry Stuart Ramsey who was Bonalbo’s first butcher in the 1920s.
They had three children John, Fraser and Naida.
Agnes loved horses and her sons followed her passion. Apparently her daughter was more interested in fashion.
John Ramsey had a butcher shop in Casino. His son owns the horse So You Are racing in the Melbourne Cup.
Stuart is also a nephew of Fraser Ramsey.
Fraser helped secure the bronze dog statue marking Bonalbo as the site of Australia’s first working cattle dog trials. Fraser was also an auctioneer.
Trainer Bjron Baker Racing said Stuart Ramsey set out to breed an Australian stayer specifically to take on the international horses that have come to dominate the Melbourne Cup.
“When So You Are failed to meet his reserve at the yearling sales, he kept him.
“There is a more personal significance too. Stuart promised his father, a lifelong Cup devotee, that he would one day breed a Melbourne Cup winner. His father marked the winner on the calendar in his butcher’s shop, but passed away 40 years ago.”
“It’s a race my own father spent years trying to crack, with a second, two fourths and two fifths to his name,” Stuart said.
Good luck So You Are – there’s a lot riding on you.
