The State Government says it is tackling illegal tobacco sales and lack of compliance with new tough penalties and an enforcement team.
Forty-eight fulltime staff will work for the Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in NSW Health.
The staff will operate across metropolitan, rural, and remote locations.
In the past two years, there has been an increase in the number of shops selling tobacco in Richmond Valley and Kyogle.
One tobacco shop in Kyogle advertises that it also sells lollies.
The establishment of an enforcement unit announced by the State Government today, Thursday, August 21 will impose the tougher tobacco and vaping laws.
The Centre for Regulation and Enforcement will work closely with the Australian Border Force, police, and the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The enforcement unit supports the work done by the Illicit Tobacco Taskforce.
Landlords who knowingly lease their premises to illicit tobacco and vape suppliers can be penalised.
These new penalties and offences will take effect from October 1.
