Two washing machines, two dryers — all on one trailer — Mary’s Mobile Laundry is on display in Casino.
St Mary’s School campus principal Sam Irvine is the one behind the laundry project.
“It’s a reality now,” Mr Irvine said.
“We pushed really hard and we raised $50,000 in six months.”
The mobile laundry is on display at the Coles car park in Canterbury Street today, Friday, February 20 at 10am—1pm.
Mr Irvine said the display is about raising awarenes in the community before the free mobile laundry is put to use.
As he was talking a woman came out of the supermarket. She said she was touched to see the laundry trailer because it showed the community cares for vulnerable people.
It’s so good to see, she said.
Initally the mobile laundry will be situated in the car park behind the Catholic church on Centre Street.
“We’re hoping to have it open twice a week at 4pm—6pm,” Mr Irvine said.
The laundry trailer has to be in a location that is close to water and sewer.
“We have our own generator,” he said.
There are three phases to the rollout of Mary’s Mobile Laundry.
The first phase will see school staff run the laundry.
The second phase is staff, students and their families pitching in.
Phase three is about making it open to the community to borrow.
“I want to make sure people know it’s out there,” Mr Irvine said.
