Richmond Valley Council has $25,187 available to help restore heritage buildings across the LGA.
The council supports heritage owners through an annual Heritage Grants Program and a free Heritage Advisory Service.
The $25,187 budget for the 2026 Heritage Grants Program is made up of $6000 from Heritage NSW and a $19,187 contribution from the council.
Grants are generally provided on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis and are usually capped at $2000.
In April 2019, the council decided larger grants would be considered for significant restoration projects where justified on merit and priority grounds, with a minimum owner contribution of $2 for every $1 of grant funding.
The program supports the conservation, restoration and reinstatement of heritage fabric and features, helping preserve the Richmond Valley’s cultural heritage and historic character.
The council received 12 applications in the 2026 funding round.
Eleven are recommended for funding, totalling $25,090.
This includes one major restoration project recommended for a grant above the standard cap, consistent with the adopted funding framework – and it is the most costly.
That project is the restoration of the front facade of the art deco building at 83 Walker Street, Casino. The building will be painted, the Juliet balconies restored and reinstated, and the guttering replaced. The north and south walls will be reclad in Colorbond sheeting to match current finishes.
The work is estimated to cost $133,000, with a recommended heritage grant of $11,500.
Other recommended projects are in Casino, Coraki and Woodburn.
The full list, below, is from the agenda for the council meeting at Casino Chambers at 6pm on Tuesday, October 20. The community can attend all council meetings and watch proceedings from the public gallery. Councillors will vote on this at the meeting.
