The efforts of Evans Head Marine Rescue members during the 2019 bushfires were rewarded with the presentation of National Emergency Medals.

Deputy unit commander Jim Roberts, Kira Hartland and Ken and Kerrie Exley were presented the medals by Federal MP Kevin Hogan.

It has taken a long time for the medals to be issued but it doesn’t detract from the efforts members made during the 2019 bushfires.

We were the first marine rescue unit to help, Mr Roberts said.

“We got involved in the logistics and the radio side of it.”

Ms Hartland, Mr Exley and Ms Exley liaised with fire crews and offered radio support.

“We had been pushing for close liaison with other first responders,” Mr Roberts said.

“We worked closely with SES and RFS.”

Mr Roberts liaised with the New Zealand crews at Broadwater who were assisting with the fires.

“A huge number of our members stood up to be available for doorknocks and food deliveries,” he said.

Evans Head Marine Rescue is seeking more members. Find out what is involved in joining the team by phoning Karin Brown on 0438 328 740 or go to the Evans Head Marine Rescue Facebook page.
