Passengers in car lifted up steep embankment by rescue crews after crash on Kyogle Road

Emergency services were called to a car crash on Kyogle Road, Cawongla at 10.15am today, Sunday, May 3.

Police were were told a car with three occupants inside had gone over a steep embankment.

Rescue crews from SES, VRA Rescue NSW, Fire and Rescue NSW and Police Rescue worked together to establish a vertical rescue system. 

Using haul lines and specialised battery-operated rescue equipment, teams carefully removed sections of the car to get the driver and passengers out.

Each patient was then placed into rescue baskets and hauled up the steep embankment via vertical rescue lines.

Once at the top, they were handed over to paramedics for treatment.

Paramedics treated a 17 year old girl, an 18 year old man and a 42 year old woman before they were taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Fire and Rescue NSW, SES, RFS and Volunteer Rescue Association members assisted with recovery.

An investigation into the cause of the crash has begun.
