Firefighters rushed to a structure fire in the Backmede area, near Fairy Hill at 4.15pm today, Wednesday, October 16.

When crews arrived, they found the property owners were burning waste in a closed shipping container.

The owners were concerned about the risk of the container exploding because of a flashover.

A flashover is the near simultaneous ignition of combustible material in an enclosed area. When many materials are heated, they release flammable gases. Flashover occurs when the majority of surfaces within the enclosed area are heated to the auto-ignition temperature of those flammable gases.

Casino Rural Fire Brigade crew cooled the container until it was safe to open.

They could then leave it with the property owners.

Firefighters from North Casino RFS – Fairy Hill and Kyogle Headquarters RFS also attended.

This information was provided by RFS Brigades.
