National Parks and Wildlife Service are doing a hazard reduction burn in Bundjalung National Park starting today, Friday, September 4.
The 28.96ha burn is in Bundjalung National Park, along the Evans River near Evans Head.
The aim of the burn is to reduce the chance of bushfire impacts to the area and reintroduce cultural fire practices to the local Bandjalang community, while also protecting culturally significant resource trees and riparian vegetation, NPWS said.
All tracks and trails within the burn area will be closed during burning, including Bundjalung Road and Gumma Garra day use areas.
This includes informal tracks and trails. Tracks will be reopened once it is safe.
Drivers are reminded to drive to conditions and take care if visibility is reduced by smoke.
Smoke may affect the area and people with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
