This is part of a paid promotion by North East Waste
As the weather warms starts to pick up, many of us start thinking about a good spring clean, but it’s also the perfect time to deal with those bits of household problem waste that tend to linger in sheds, cupboards and garages.
Getting on top of them now, doesn’t just tidy your space — it helps keep your home and community safer when storms or flooding roll through.
Problem waste includes things like old paint tins, gas bottles, fluoro lightbulbs, batteries, smoke detectors, and oils.
None of these belong in your household bins, but they can be dropped off for free at your local Community Recycling Centre (CRC), where they’ll be safely recycled or disposed of.
When severe weather hits, these items can become dangerous very quickly. If they’re damaged, knocked over or washed away, they can leak into the environment or pose serious risks to people cleaning up after the storm.
And remember, waste facilities can also be impacted during major weather events, meaning you may end up storing hazardous items for much longer than you intended.
So, while you’re clearing out cupboards, reorganising the shed or doing that long overdue garage sortout, take the opportunity to get rid of problem waste properly.
You can drop off up to 20L or 20kg per material type per visit for free at your local CRC. Visit www.newaste.org.au/crc
If you’ve got handheld batteries (up to 5kg), you can also take advantage of the many convenient Bcyclecollection points at supermarkets and hardware stores across the region. Find your nearest at www.bcycle.com.au
Devices with embedded batteries ebikes and scooters, vapes, electric toothbrushes, Bluetooth speakers and more, can also be safely recycled for free at either the Ballina, Lismore or Kyogle CRC.
For full details on what’s accepted and how to recycle all types of batteries, visit: www.newaste.org.au/batteries
A tidy home is a safer home — especially in storm season, so clear out now, before wild weather arrives.
This project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy initiative, funded from the waste levy.
