Two of the four who died in Wardell ute crash may not have been wearing seatbelts

Police gave further details about the car crash where four people were killed near Wardell this morning, Saturday, February 24.

The names of the man driving and the three passengers – two men and a woman – who died at the scene have not been released until all family members are notified.

Richmond Police District’s Inspector Mary Tanner answered questions about the crash in Lismore today.

“It appears there were at least two (passengers) not wearing seatbelts,” she said

Police have said the ute rolled over on a “sweeping left hand bend on Back Channel Road.

“Driving around the bend, lost control and hit a tree,” Inspector Tanner said.

She said police confirmed the ute was not registered locally.

Emergency services were called to Back Channel Road at 5.45am today after a passerby alerted police.

On arrival, police found a blue Mazda BT50 utility had rolled.

Police have said the occupants of the car were – three men aged in their 30s, 40s and 50s and a woman in her 20s.

Investigations continue.
