A truck on fire closed the Bruxner Highway near Richmond Range Road and the Mallanganee Lookout at 12.15pm on Wednesday, October 4.

The truck’s engine ignited and the driver managed to get out of the truck and escape injury.

The truck was towing a trailer carrying a front-end loader.

Fire and Rescue Casino, RFS crews and nearby water carriers prevented the fire from spreading to the trailer and its load.

The Fire and Rescue crew wore breathing gear and used foam to finish off the fire.

The truck was on the western side of the Richmond Range and water diesel and foam ran down the road. Crews contained that run-off with hazmat booms and pillows.

The truck’s diesel tank had burnt open at the top but about half a tank of diesel remained.

A Hazmat Sprinter from Goonellabah was called and when the crew arrived they decanted the remaining diesel into a hazmat recovery bin for safe transportation.

The highway was closed until the truck was towed away.
