They were one of the first fire brigade crews into Coraki during the floods in 2022, Mallanganee RFS captain Neville O’Malley said.

“We also hosed out Broadwater Sugar Mill.”

Mallanganee like many other brigades helped in the flood recovery and 10 of its members were acknowledged with a NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation and badge on Sunday, May 24.

Neville read out a message from Premier Chris Minns.

Group 7 captain Barry Morgan from Mummulugum Fire Brigade was there to present the certificates.

“As a kid in Woodburn, Dad was a butcher and we had the only tractor in Woodburn,” he said.

In those days, everyone was in the RFs, he said.

“The whole RFS family – no matter where you are – everyone has each other’s back.”

The brigade like many others has already received citations for their efforts in the 2018 bushfires.

“It’s nice to be recognised,” Neville said about the flood citations.

Mallanganee RFS Brigade has 17 members – they always need more, Neville said.

The average age of members is 60 years.
