Hungry Jacks DA is in, responses due by June 5

The proposed site for a Hungry Jacks in the Casino CBD.

Susanna Freymark

Hungry Jacks plans to build on a corner block that spans 178-180 Walker Street and 104-106 North Street, opposite Days Machinery. There will be a restaurant and drive-through.

The architect is Fang Architects and the engineer is Meliora Engineering.

Flood considerations mean the finished floor level must be 23.40m AHD (Australian Height Datum) – that is 23.4m above average sea level. Fill will be needed to bring the building to this elevation.

The DA2026/0213 can be viewed here and residents must give feedback and make submissions by June 5.

The site requires demolition works, vegetation removal, and the construction of a food and drink premises with drive through and signage.

The applicant for this DA is Craft Acquisition Pty Ltd and the construction of the Hungry Jacks in Casino is expected to be more than $4million.

Here what else the DA tells us:

The proposal is for the demolition of all existing structures on the site (buildings and sheds) for the construction of a single storey food and drink premises (height 6.3m) with a drive through component and 20 car parking spaces.

There will be a 12m high pylon sign with the Hungry Jacks logo.

Hungry Jacks plans to be open 5am–11pm daily, with truck movements, including deliveries and waste collection, to be limited to daytime only.

The site has water, sewer, telecommunications, electricity, and stormwater. There are sewer pipes running in a north/south and east/west direction within 104-106 North Street.

Richmond Valley Council has deemed the proposal as an opportunity to upgrade existing sewer infrastructure that is about 90 years old and in poor condition.

At pre-lodgement meeting, the council said it would seek to rectify the existing underground sewer. The DA seeks consent to decommission the existing sewer tranch which extends east from the main north/south line.

While the Hungry Jacks site is located within the commercial centre zone, there are houses adjoining the site on the north and west.

The DA outlines landscaping strips along the dividing boundaries that have include screen planting and acoustic fencing to minimise noise and light disturbance to these houses.

The illuminated signs will be turned off at 11pm.
