Former farmers, cattle handlers and lifelong locals came together to celebrate Beef Week with a special resident versus chef cook-off at Whiddon aged care facility in Casino this week.

Whiddon residents Neville Bryant, a former dairy farmer, John Nicholls who previously showed cattle and worked with cattle and pigs, and Neil Shephard who grew up breeding cows and pigs, all took part.

In partnership with local butcher Madsen Meats, residents selected their favourite sausage flavours ahead of the event, with the sausages specially prepared for the cook-off using locally sourced beef from the Northern Rivers region.

A highlight of the day was resident and former Beef Week champion John Nicholls proudly displaying his ribbons and trophies.

The event kicked off with a Beef Week trivia session before moving into the barbecue showdown, where residents watched their specially crafted sausages cook while the Whiddon chef prepared steak for the ultimate taste test.

In the end, the sausages took out the win according to guest judge and area manager chef Mat Hunt.

Whiddon’s Michael Monteleone said Casino Beef Week is such an important part of the local community.

“Food is about so much more than nutrition. It’s about connection, identity, comfort and creating moments of joy,” Mr Monteleone said.
