Fire and Rescue NSW received several calls at 10am this morning about gas leaks or the smell of gas in locations around the Casino CBD.
Two trucks headed to a number of places across town to investigate. This included industrial facilities, schools and businesses with bulk LPG storage.
The Hazmat crew from Goonellabah and the duty commander from Ballina assisted.
While gas detectors showed low level readings in several places, all readings were below alarm level.
Crews could also detect the odour intermittently across town. Reports were received from the north west corner of town and right throughout the town centre.
At one stage the odour appeared concentrated in the grounds of Casino High School. The bulk LPG cylinder was isolated and students and staff were evacuated to the school hall.
Fire and Rescue crews wearing breathing apparatus checked the atmosphere with a gas detector around the gas cylinder, science labs and kitchen areas.
No readings were detected and the school was declared safe for students to return to class.
Casino Police and Richmond Valley Council also assisted in the investigation.
After extensive investigations, no source of the odour was identified. The odour eventually dissipated and crews were stood down around 1pm.
