At about 10am this morning, Monday, May 19, there was a smell of gas in Casino.

And it was everywhere.

The Fire and Rescue truck was in Walker Street checking the back of the Commercial Hotel but the smell was strong right on the other side of the CBD too near the Bruxner Highway.

At the supermarket the smell of gas pervaded.

The smell was right across the CBD and further.

IndyNR.com asked the council, Fire and Rescue and police where it was coming from.

Richmond Valley Council said emergency services had been called but the exact location of the gas smell had not been identified yet.

At 12.30pm, the smell had dissipated, the council said.

Where did the smell come from?

Fire and Rescue and Hazmat crews are still trying to find out.

Hazmat are doing readings, a Fire and Rescue spokesperson said.

It’s possibly not a gas leak, the spokesperson said.

Investigations at 12.30pm even included the possibility that it could be a truck of organic waste — somewhere.

“There’s no doubt there’s an odour, Hazmat is there,” Fire and Rescue said.

IndyNR.com will provide an update as soon as one comes in from emergency services.
