Coaches met with a special visitor for a coaching session in Casino today, Wednesday, February 14.

Australian rugby league footballer and coach Brian Smith was at the Casino RSM Cougars Club today.

The good news for the club is that Smith will be assisting with coach education at the club for international age groups.

It’s close to home for Smith who went to school in Casino and played first grade for the Cougars.

This season Cougars will see some changes in the organising structure of the club with some new board roles.

Long-time club legend Joe Maloney, who played a crucial role in putting the club back on track, has stepped back from official duties this season. Because of this rugby league identity and Cougars junior Trav Falls will take on the role of president while Cougars life member Chris McGrath will be vice president.

Kirk Hancock will continue as junior’s president and life member and junior senior vice president Ben Birney will be the U18 coach.

The Cougars grounds will be looking better with funding secured by Richmond Valley Council to improve fencing around the main fields, upgrades to the second field with underground irrigation and a new surface, and a $1.6million enhancement to the clubhouse facilities.

Mr Falls highlights said the sponsorship from Casino RSM Club since 1966 has been crucial to the club’s success. A recent connection with Casino Food Co-op has seen players from Papua New Guinea join the game.
