Agents yarded 1552 head at the sales at the Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange today, Wednesday, February 14.

Young cattle were well supplied but cow numbers were well down.

The yarding of young cattle consisted of several runs of weaners and there were a few more yearlings through the sale.

Quality was good with most cattle in good condition. There were several runs of well-bred weaner steers and heifers offered and a fair number of cross-bred cattle through the sale.

Restockers acquired the largest percentage of young cattle with only an odd sale going to slaughter.

Restocker and background-buyers were selective in their purchases resulting in well-bred weaner steers holding firm, plainer type cattle were more heavily discounted.

Restocker weaner steers sold from 266c to 460c, while restocker weaner heifers ranged from 246c to 366c/kg.

There were a few more yearling steers yarded this week which saw a wide range in prices depending on weight and quality.

Most steers sold from 250c to 356c and yearling heifers topped at 296c/kg.

The yarding of export cattle consisted of a larger supply of grown steers, but cow numbers were down. Quality was good which is a reflection of the good season in the area.

There was little change in grown steers selling from 290c to 310c while grown heifers sold at a top price of 296c/kg.
