The sound and smell of cattle in pens at the Casino saleyards was familiar – after seven months of quiet.

Buyers leaned on the rails, studying the cattle. The voice of the auctioneer echoed under the curved tin roof.

Outcross Agri Services ran this first sale at the Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange after seven long months of no sales.

Outcross managing director Tom Newsome said there would be two sales every week – Wednesday and Friday – until July.

Today’s sale had 1760 head of cattle penned.

The top price for a cow was $1424. The best price for cows & calves was $2400.

Average weight per head at the sale was 287.8kg and the average price per head sold was $1743.

Outcross have leased the saleyards from Richmond Valley Council after negotiations between the council and agents were unresolved.

When the full cattle report for today is completed by NRLX staff it will be published here.
