RFS loses one of its own at fire front

A volunteer firefighter was working on a fire at Bean Creek in Kyogle LGA today, Saturday, October 14, when he suffered a medical episode.

Fellow RFS members used an automated external defibrillator until an ambulance arrived.

RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said the man’s tragic death is a solemn reminder about the dangers faced by members.

“This is a terrible tragedy, where a volunteer helping protect his community has paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Commissioner Rogers said.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and firefighting colleagues at this terrible time. We are offering every assistance to his family and fellow brigade members.”

The Bean Creek Road fire had burned 417 hectares.
