Young country women vie for show title

Seven young women are hoping to be selected as this year’s Kyogle Show Young Woman of the Year.

Emily Newton, Charlize Taylor, Sophie Butler, Pippa Galvin, Pippa Kennedy, Hayley Butler and Charlie Murray were at a celebration on Saturday, September 7 at the Kyogle Golf Club.

A panel of three judges interviewed each entrant and then the entrants took part in an on-stage interview as well.

Domonique Wyse who is the 2024 Sydney Royal Young Women winner came to Kyogle for the event.

The winner of the 2024 Young Women Event will be announced at the official opening of the 115th Kyogle Show at 2pm on Saturday, September 28.

Meet the entrants

Charlie Murray – 21 years

Occupation – Livestock handler and admin office at Northern Rivers Co-Operative.

Qualifications – Completed a certificate in animal care, animal welfare, agriculture, furniture making and hospitality

Interests – I enjoy cooking, camping, photography as well as music.

Goal – My goal is to work in remote regional areas in the livestock industry and would like to acquire my own beef property.

Charlize Taylor – 18

Occupation – Shipping & Logistics at Northern Rivers Co-Operative

Qualifications – Currently studying a Cert III in Supply Chain.

Interests – I enjoy photography, showing cattle, riding horses and helping grow our family cattle operation.

Goal – My goal is to work in different fields of the agricultural industry gaining as much knowledge as I can, eventually managing a property. I would also like to create a photography book in order to promote the high and lows of the agricultural industry.

Emily Newton – 19

Occupation – Saleyard assistant at Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange

Qualifications – Certificate II in primary industries and currently working towards my Certificate III in primary industries.

Interests – I enjoy fishing, showing cattle and participating in RFS duties.

Goal – My goal is to continue to work in the agricultural industry and to work towards owning my own black angus stud farm.

Hayley Butler – 21

Occupation – Receptionist at Kyogle Osteopathy & Wellbeing

Qualifications – Currently completing a traineeship through Kyogle Osteopathy & wellbeing where I have obtained a Certificate II in business administration. I also completed a certificate in Food & Beverage.

Interests – I have always loved baking so when I was 14 I started my own cake decorating business which is called Create a Cake. This allows me to be creative and make people happy through my creations. The best part is seeing how excited the kids are when their cake arrives.

Goal – My goals are to continue to grow my business, be a positive role model within the community, and to continue to learn and grow as a person

Juniors

Sophie Butler – 16

Interests – I love absolutely anything to do with animals and I also enjoy working after school at the hairdressers which enables me to learn new things.

Goals – I would love to become a hairdresser as I really enjoy it.

Community Involvement – Every year after the show I help my family move the Derby cars in and out of the showgrounds with our tow trucks.

Pippa Galvin – 13

Interests – I love swimming, ballet, working in our veggie garden and with our Shetland ponies, reading and crafts.

Goals – I am currently completing Advanced 2 Ballet – RAD. I want to become KHS school captain when I am in Year 12. I also want to represent KHS in sporting events at state.

Community Involvement – I have always attended the Dawn Service and ANZAC March at which I spoke as KPS captain. I am a member of the Kyogle swimming club, I have participated at the Giant Pumpkin Festival, competed in the Junior section of Kyogle Showgirl and have entered the pavilions at Kyogle Show.

Pippa Kennedy – 16

Interests – I enjoy rugby union, Little Athletics, Dance, fitness and horse riding.

Goals – My goal is to one day play for the Wallaroos and own a physiotherapy & health clinic.

Community Involvement – I am a dance teacher at Lacro and I also help out at Little Athletics training. I have competed in campdrafts at Kyogle show for a number of years.
