BORDER: Can I go to Queensland for Christmas?

Susanna Freymark
Queensland is aiming for 80% of the state’s population to be fully vaccinated by December 17.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she wants greater freedom across the border and December 17 is the date she has set for that to happen.

Currently Queensland sits at 57.45% of those who are fully vaccinated and 72.81% of the population have had their first vaccine dose, well behind the vaccination numbers in NSW.

There were no new local covid cases today in Queensland. In total, there have been seven covid deaths in Queensland since the start of the pandemic.

For NSW residents who want to travel to Queensland, there are still several hoops to jump through to be able to do that. By December 17, it should be a whole lot easier.

As with every decision we’ve taken throughout the global pandemic, this is a measured and cautious plan.

And cautious she is.

Currently, if you have been in a NSW hotspot or at an exposure site you cannot enter Queensland.
If you haven’t been in a hotspot, you can apply for a border pass declaration  here – opens in new tab

Going natural: new play park could be ready by Christmas

From November 19 when Queensland is at 70% vax rate
You can enter by air only from a NSW hotspot but you must:

  • Be fully vaccinated
  • Have had a negative covid test 72 hours prior
  • You must complete 14 days in home quarantine

By December 17 when Queensland is at 80% vax rate
You can enter by air or road from a NSW hotspot but you must :

  • Be fully vaccinated
  • Have had a negative covid test 72 hours prior
  • No quarantine required

From the 80% mark, further public health restrictions will apply to unvaccinated people in Queensland such as venues and events which allow unvaccinated people may be subject to a range of public health restrictions such as capacity and density limits.

That’s it Mum, I’m coming home for Christmas.
