Sudden closure of fish and chip shop has upset locals

The sudden closure has surprised Evans Head residents.

One thing everyone likes about Evans Head is that you can walk to everything — ice cream, supermarket, the pub, fish and chips.

So the sudden closure of the Fish Centre is Oak Street has surprised many residents.

Tanya Jones who runs the Fish Centre is looking for a new shop in Evans Head but there isn’t much available.

The owners are knocking the building down and rebuilding, Tanya said.

There are plans for two shops and units upstairs.

Tanya points to the ceiling of the shop — it’s a bit of a mess so she’s aware the place needs to be fixed.

Her main concern before closing was her 20 staff.

“I didn’t want to shut the door until everyone had a job,” Tanya said.

The Evans Head bakery has taken on most of the staff.

Tanya has run the fish and chip shop for a year. Before that she worked at there for eight years.

She kept the food affordable, she said.

There is a pizza shop next door — that’s going too.

While there is still fish and chips available at the Co-op and Beach Kiosk, the Fish Centre was such a convenient location.

Tanya said a lot of people were upset about the closure after she announced it on the shop’s Facebook page.
